A waygate is an interdimensional gateway that allows matter to travel between different dimensions. Waygates can only transport an object along the 4th dimensional axis and cannot relocate an object in 3 dimensional space. The Aethersteel universe has a vast waygate network built by The old Ones as a means of traversing the many dimensions they had created at the height of their empire. The waygate network lay dormant for thousands of years until the darking of the sun suddenly reactivated them.

Appearance

Waygates operate on a square metallic/stone platform that is flat and about the size of the base of a small house. There is a bowl shaped indentation in the center. The platform may or may not have engravings in its surface. The platform sits slightly above the ground, and has sloped edges leading up to it. At each corner is a spike that shoots a bolt of lighting toward a point about 3 feet above the center of the platform; where these bolts meet a polished black sphere forms as the gateway. Most of these platforms are overgrown with vegetation from over the years. The platform utilizes a kind of compression technology that allows the spikes and bowl to be absorbed into it making its surface completely flat. The bowl itself can adjust its size to match the size of the sphere which will adjust to the size whatever object it is attempting to transport. The sphere has a slight gravitational pull to it, forcing objects on the platform to enter the sphere. Travel through the sphere is instantaneous. You cannot see through the sphere to your destination. Each waygate is marked with a nameplate of the realm it is on, making it easy for travelers to denote their location. Waygates operate on strict timers, presumable programmed by the Sovereign. Reprogramming a waygate to a new destination is difficult, and the ability to do so is only possessed by Teknocrats (or its original creators). A waygates which has had its destination altered will eventually revert to its original programming.

Operation

Waygates operate by creating a wormhole through the nexus to a new physical plane. Objects passing through the waygate never actually come into contact with the Nexus although they travel through it. Travel through the gate is instantaneous, and waygates will automatically force out anything that enters into them. While a waygate transfers the traveler to a new dimension, the traveler’s physical location (longitude, latitude, and altitude) on the planet does not change. Waygate travel between realms is only possible if both dimensions have waygates in the exact same positions. The Sovereign designed many safeguards into the waygates. A waygate will not open if it does not think travel is safe, and if its connection is suddenly cut off it will forcefully eject any substance traveling inside it. Waygates will not allow high pressured fluids to pass through them (water or air). Waygates will also stop harmful loose energy (laser blasts) and will reduce the kinetic energy of high speed objects attempting to pass through (bullets). Waygates will allow radio waves to pass through them, but only if it evaluates that the transmission of such signal was intended for interdimensional travel.
